• The VMM is very excited to once again speak to the iconic DJ producer vocalist writer and 80’s pop guru Boy George about his brand new artist Album that’s out now called “Ordinary Alien”. Certainly this is no Ordinary artist who has helped change the sound of popular music with his Amazing vocal tones and master of lyric writing creating some of the world’s greatest pop songs of all time. Now after 10 years he brings us his next chapter a new collection of tracks with his frequently collaborative partner Kinky Roland. Boy George and Kinky Roland have worked closely over the past 15 years and Ordinary Alien is born out of this relationship – the pair are renowned for their seemingly never-ending surplus of quality material and this album is packed full of them.

    The Interview:

Hi George great to speak to you here again in the VMM and hope all is well with you and this fantastic album release.

VMM Q: Boy George for those who have not had a chance to have a listen can you describe the sounds of your new album “Ordinary Alien“ what’s been different about this album journey for you?

Boy George: To tell you the truth..not much really. I approached it the same as I would any other project however, in this case it was more a process of putting forward some material I’ve longed to see released but never before had the chance to do it, so we took the decision to just do it. Some tracks on there are new and others are quite old.

VMM Q:The VMM would like to ask how did you and Kinky Rolad begin working on this collection of tracks and do you enjoy collaborations more than working solo George?

Boy George: Most of the tracks have been around for some 20 years so it was just a case of Kinky and I picking the ones we liked best. Kinky did all the remastering and remix work, as we went through the process of compiling the records. I still love solo work the best but working with Ronson last year taught me to free myself up from my own creative ideas and collaborate in different ways, something I’d not always been entirely comfortable with before.

VMM Q: George can you tell the VMM do you have a fav track from your “Ordinary Alien “album if so why?

Boy George: It’s hard to say which an absolute favorite of mine, because I enjoy each of them for different reasons. For example I like ‘Brand New’ because it has a really good dance track nature to it but then ‘Amazing Grace’ has a very precious place in my heart because of its big impact for me last year.

VMM Q: The VMM would like to know Boy George why did you decide to call the Album“Ordinary Alien“?

Boy George: It’s what I am! I’ve always known I’m a bit weird but there is another side to me that’s just ordinary, like a sort of ‘ordinary alien’ that you could bring home to meet your mum.

VMM Q: Can you tell the VMM what support have you had from the industry so far for your“ Ordinary Alien“ album?

Boy George: A lot of support from radio and tv which has been very heartwarming. ‘Amazing Grace’, which was released earlier in the year, has probably been the biggest track off the album so far with names like Armin van Buuren and Sister Bliss giving it good reactions, has done very well on its own merit. It’s still early for a few of the other songs.

VMM Q: Boy George as a well respected award winning producer of pop & dance music can you tell the VMM how do you feel the music industry has changed for a recording artist over the last decade?

Boy George: It’s always been a difficult arena to step into but today it’s a vicious world. Money has surpassed talent in some parts, which is extremely sad to see. Reality style music shows have led people to wanting to become ‘famous’ instead of wanting to celebrate talent. Another sad fact for the recording industry is that there are people who don’t buy music anymore but instead steal through the Internet; the impact of this on recording artists is tragic really. But where the recording part has suffered, the live scene has boomed. Live music has never been so healthy, which is great to see again.

VMM Q: The VMM knows you have released the wonderful “ Amazing Grace” as a single so what other singles will you be releasing from the “Ordinary Alien” album and have you any remixes on board for theses releases?

Boy George: Right now we’re still reshuffling some of our plans as there has been a lot of demand for certain songs on the album in a number of different countries. ‘Turn 2 Dust’ may be single from the album and if so I expect would feature a few remix versions to accompany the original, but nothings fully confirmed yet.

VMM Q: The VMM heard in a recent interview on UK TV that you were looking at Culture Club coming back on tour so when is this going to happen George and are you looking to write some new tracks for the tour or will you re-work for release the Culture Club classics?

Boy George: All I can say for now is we’re talking at the moment; we don’t know what we’re going to do at the yet, but definitely something will happen. Mark Ronson has been mentioned and that’s a possibility, but again it’s too early to say.

VMM Q: Can you tell the VMM George will you be touring the “Ordinary Alien“ album around the globe and if so where and when and also what can we expect to see in performances on this album tour?

Boy George: My diary with both the live shows and dj gigs is pretty full already so it’s likely I’ll fuse the album between my different shows and bringing to life many of the tracks in that way, club dates more so than live for this one.

The VMM thanks Boy George for taking time out for this Album Interview and we wish you success for the new album and success for the rest of 2011.
