FLAMBOYANT singer and DJ Boy George has pledged never again to touch narcotics after a life of excess marked by drug-fuelled scandal and run-ins with police.

Twenty-five years since shooting to fame, George, right – who has struggled with heroin abuse in the past – has come clean about his addictions.

And he has revealed that, despite their damage, he continued to use cocaine daily until six months ago when, unable to walk or stand properly, he finally sought help.

“I've been strung out on drugs for the past five years,” admits the ex-Culture Club front man, 47. “But this time I'm clean for good. I don't want to die.”

He adds: “I haven't really told anyone this but I've spent five years in this chemical cloud. Getting clean at the end of 2007 was a very big thing.

“I was using half my brain, half my personality on drugs. Now I know it won't happen again. I've done the tour, worn the T-shirt. When I gave up before, I thought I was losing something... now I know I'm gaining half my mind back.”

The portly star, whose real name is George O'Dowd, claims he sunk back into drug use after the savaging of his stage show Taboo when it went to Broadway in 2003, culminating in a drugs bust at his New York home two years later.

But despite the arrest and a subsequent stint as a road sweeper as part of his community service in Manhattan, he was still not ready to kick his£400-a-day habit.

It was only after a friend persuaded him to attend Narcotics Anonymous late last year that George finally gave in. “I was like an old man. I could barely walk because I'd been using so much,” he tells

Q Magazine, adding forcefully: “Now I'm completely clean. I don't drink and I don't take drugs.”

Drugs have long been a feature of George's life. In 1995 he told of his substance-induced fall from fame in his autobiography Take It Like A Man, writing about his convictions and relapses.

Last month George, who is desperate for a pop comeback, was forced to drop plans for a US tour after his visa request was denied because he faces charges in Britain of assaulting and imprisoning a male escort in London.

The singer, who denies the allegations, will stand trial in November.
