ARTICLE SUNDAY TIME STAR : Boy oh boy

Boy oh boy - just look who's coming to town

Hold on to your hats - Boy George is spinning into Auckland this week.

The colourful British pop icon of the '80s, who reinvented himself as a DJ, is performing at the Ministry of Sound event at Auckland's St James Theatre on Friday.

It will be the former Culture Club frontman's first visit to New Zealand and comes just weeks after the release of his first vocal single in years, Time Machine.

Boy George started spinning records professionally in the early '90s after the break-up of Culture Club and a messy battle to beat heroin addiction. He's now one of the world's most in-demand DJs.

He is being brought to New Zealand by Auckland-based Metro Entertainment. No one from Metro could be reached for comment but a St James Theatre spokeswoman said they were very excited about having an artist of Boy George's calibre performing there.

Boy George formed Culture Club with drummer Jon Moss in 1982. The band's third single Do You Really Want to Hurt Me? became a global hit. The album Kissing To Be Clever became the first debut album since The Beatles to produce three top 10 hits in the US.

Karma Chameleon, off Culture Club's second album, was one of the most played songs of the 80s.
