• "Do They Really Want to Hurt Me?"

Former CULTURE CLUB frontman BOY GEORGE has officially cancelled his forthcoming U.S. tour after he was refused permission to enter the country.
The British singer - real name George O'Dowd - had a visa application turned down because of his 2006 conviction for lying about a burglary at his New York apartment.
The star had scheduled a series of solo shows which would have taken him across the U.S. this summer (08), but now all of the gigs have been scrapped as his management have failed to rectify the visa situation.
O'Dowd was due to kick off the tour in Aspen, Colorado on 10 July (08), wrapping the roadshow with a final gig in Dallas, Texas on 23 August (08).

Do you really want to hurt him ?

  • POP QUIZ BOY GEORGE

Boy George was one of the great pop stars of the '80s, but since Culture Club fell apart in 1986, it seems as if he's been balancing a busy life playing DJ, writing autobiographies and creating the stage musical "Taboo" between personal crises that keep landing him in the courts and on the streets of New York picking up litter. On the eve of his first U.S. tour in 10 years, the 47-year-old singer tells us he's finally in a better place. Boy George plays July 18 at the Grand Ballroom at the Regency Center in San Francisco.

Q: You've had your tabloid stuff. George Michael is passing out behind the wheel on the streets of London. Adam Ant was last seen waving a pistol around a pub in a cowboy hat. Why does it feel like all my favorite singers from the '80s are self-destructing?

A: Well, I admire the fact that you've set the tone right away. I understand that I will be asked such questions, and that's fine, because I have refurbished my horizons and self-destruction is no longer an option. I can't talk for the other George, although he has just finished a major tour, which suggests the asleep-at-the-wheel situation was a brief excursion from sanity. Adam Ant has mental-health issues, and that is very different and more serious than the sort of self-destructiveness that myself and George Michael were embroiled in. So, talking purely for myself, I can tell you that my head is firmly screwed back on - the right way - and I am a far saner human being than I have been in a long time, if not forever.

Q: Was it cruel and unusual punishment to put you on the streets of the Lower East Side with a shovel and broom?

A: I had a truly wonderful time working with the folk at the New York Sanitation Department, and I was treated with great kindness by the people who clean up your rubbish. I also received tremendous affection from New Yorkers, and what threatened to be a heinous experience actually turned out to be quite rewarding. It was a photo op, and I refer to it as my "media service," but I was responsible for putting myself in a dangerous situation and I broke the law, and the outcome might have been far worse. So, all in all, I was pretty lucky. I hated the orange jerkin, but it's no longer in my wardrobe.

Q: Why isn't this a Culture Club tour?

A: Because we split up, and I'm more than capable of doing the job without them.

Q: Were you hurt when they tried to go out with a new singer last year?

A: It was a bad idea, and it failed before it was able to start. Great idea - proving I am more than just a guy in makeup.

Q: Did your autobiographies drive away a lot of your friends?

A: It got rid of the fair-weather variety, and that's no bad thing. I am very lucky that my good friends know me well enough to read between the bitchy lines. I love the first book, but the second one was ill-informed, and I am no longer mindlessly bitchy about people. They say people don't change, but I feel more like myself every day.

Q: Why did "Taboo" go wrong?

A: Rosie (O'Donnell, producer and investor) lost the plot in translation, but it was a great success in London and ran for more than a year. Broadway was a great adventure, and I don't think "Taboo" went wrong - it was just too much too soon for Broadway. I believe it may resurface again in time and be revalued, rather like the '80s, because, at the time, no one liked that decade. But now it's de rigueur.

Q: Will your fans recognize you when you walk out onstage on this tour?

    A: Well, aside from my many hideous disfigurements and lack of teeth, I still polish up quite nicely. {sbox}
