    ~*SPECIFICS*~

AUTHOR: Maria David TITLE: Boy George And Culture Club FORMAT: Hard Cover with Dust Jacket PUBLISHER: Colour Library Books Ltd COPYRIGHT: 1984 EDITION: 1984 First Printing / First Edition ISBN: 0-862-83189-X SUBJECT: Reference > Entertainment > Music > Rock & Pop > Biography > Artists > Boy George

    ~*SYNOPSIS*~

In 1984 for the last fifteen years prior at least, the music business had been desperately searching for something or someone to tag 'the new Beatles'. That search had now been ended with the inexorable rise from night-club poseur to world-wide pop phenomenon of Boy George and Culture Club.

His appearance - 'The Look' - causes raised eyebrows, and its a look that has been copied all over the world, by individual fans as well as by fashion companies "I suppose" he once remarked "there's not much else you can do with the look. It defies the realms of sanity."

But you cant achieve the record sales, and a popularity reaching the point of adulation, on a look alone, and Boy George's music, his style and presentation, have made him a natural for stardom.

Above all, whatever his eccentricities, George's sincerity is self-evident, and that's the most appealing thing about him. Let him have the last word as usual: "I write from the heart, whether its a love song or a giggly little pop song, I write from the way I feel and the way people affect me. My songs are really about the love of life."

This large format book has a full colour glossy pictorial Dust Jacket over red cloth board covers with gold text titles while inside the pages contain a visual feast of lavish photographic images featuring several high quality photographs of Boy George and Culture Club throughout with informative text entries about the man and his music in the eighties. This rare book is now out of print at the publishers.

    ~*ABOUT THE ARTIST*~

Culture Club was a popular 1980s pop group, perhaps most noticeable for their gender-bending frontman Boy George. The other members of the band were Roy Hay on guitars and keyboards, Mikey Craig playing bass and Jon Moss on drums.

Their first album 1982's Kissing to Be Clever became a major international hit, spawning the hit singles 'Do You Really Want to Hurt Me' (which went 'all the way' in the BBC-Charts in late 1982) 'Time (Clock of the Heart)' and I'll Tumble 4 Ya. Unique in his eccentric manner of dress and androgynous look Boy George became a world-wide celebrity.

Their second album 1983's Colour By Numbers also did extremely well, giving the band its second number one hit in the UK with 'Karma Chameleon. However, trouble was brewing within the Culture Club camp. Unknown to the public George was having an affair with drummer Jon Moss. The affair (which lasted over four years) was often problematic and the pressure to hide the relationship started to take its toll.

The band also started to lose its place musically. Their next album 1984's Waking Up With the House on Fire was a major disappointment. Though the band gained a small comeback with 1986's From Luxury to Heartache (thanks to the hit 'Move Away') both George's and Jon's fights created much tension, eventually leading to the break-up of the band. Around this time, George also became addicted to heroin which created a frenzy with the tabloids. Eventually George would let go of the habit and begin his solo career. But the memory of the Culture Club phenomenon still exists to this day.
